There is a brief history which surrounds the launch of the Emporda Golf Club, back in 1989 a group of businessmen bound by their love for the game settled in the Baix Emporda area. They decided to go build a high level golf complex coupled with a residential complex. They scoured for land for a couple of months; it had to be centrally located as they were targeting an affluence customer base. They hired the famed North American golf course designer, Robert von Hagge. They finally procured 125 hectares of land in the village of Gualta. The work on the driving range and first eighteen holes was initiated in 1990. By the beginning of 1991 the Green Course (9 holes) was completed and the very next year the Blue Course (9 holes) was inaugurated. The remaining 9 holes were completed by 1993 and were christened as Gold Course.
Admirers of von Hagge will not be in awe of the stunning layout of the course. The mounds gently separate the fairways and the holes devoid of any trees and once off the fairway there exists two levels of rough before the grass emerges on the mounds. The grass is maintained in excellent condition and is quickened and trued to ensure maximum golfing performance. The Emporda Club House was inaugurated so as to coincide with the Amateur Spanish Championship. The Club offers a host of facilities including restaurant, swimming pool, restaurant and a proshop. The Emporda Club is located about 40 km from Girona, between the coast of Pals and Torroella.
The Emporda Golf Club features three nine hole courses, gold, blue and green. Each of one these courses can be played either independently or by combing one of the other two which means you get to play on three different 18 hole courses. The green and blue courses are combined for most tournaments and are the competition course of the Emporda Club. The two courses feature a large green surface which allows it to be experimented with a variety of flag positions. This translates into a plethora of possibilities for play and one gets the feeling he is playing on a brand new course every single time. The greens are trued and designed to be swift. The Green 9 is set amidst lots of water while the Blue snakes swathes its way through a lush forest. The Gold 9 is a lot kike the blue with lots of trees and set amidst the woods. A new Red 9 course was recently completed and is a fairly pen course. Unlike most tree lined courses in the Costa Brava area, the links in Emporda Club allows for some interesting pin positions. Besides the rates are fairly reasonable which makes it a great value for money, Golfers of all skill levels would find the courses enjoyably challenging and would want to return many times over. For just 68 euros you get the 18 holes, a trolley and a set of high quality Wilson Fat Shaft Irons.
